Coined “A Community of Values,” Plainfield is a town in Hendricks County, Indiana. The population estimate in 2019 was 35,287 residents. Plainfield has a total area of 25.92 square miles at an average elevation of 715 feet. Plainfield is located just 7 miles from the Indianapolis International Airport, and 19 miles from Monument Circle in Downtown Indianapolis.
Plainfield was laid out by Levi Jessup and Elias Hadley and founded in 1839. The town got its name from the “plain” Quaker Friends who settled around the area. The high school continues to honor the Quaker roots by using the name for the school’s mascot.
Plainfield is home to the National Road, U.S. Route 40, which runs through the town as Main Street. In 1842, former President Martin Van Buren was deliberately spilled from his stagecoach into the muddy highway as retaliation for his vetoing a bill from Congress to improve the highway. An elementary school near this site is named Van Buren Elementary.
Plainfield is well known for its award winning Parks and Trails system with over 20 miles of trails and the Richard A. Carlucci Recreation Center, home to the Splash Island water park. Local outdoor shopping mall, The Shops at Perry Crossing, is home to a number of trendy anchor stores and small boutiques. The historic downtown along Main Street boasts a number of walkable shops and local restaurants, and is home to the future Plainfield Performing Arts Center which is currently under construction. Conveniently located nearest to the Indianapolis International Airport, the I-70 corridor is home to a number of hotels and restaurants that serve many visitors to the greater Central Indiana area.
The Plainfield Community School Corporation serves approximately 5,694 students in grades PK-12 and spent an average of $8,267 per student in 2020. All of Plainfield Schools’ statewide student assessment scores were above the state average in 2019. Plainfield High School, home of the Quakers, has a 93.7% 4-year graduation rate with 40.3% of students earning an Honors diploma. The drop out rate is 2.1%, well below the State’s 7.9% average. Plainfield is also home to a number of private schools.
